McVitty, born in Melbourne 1934 has been professionally concerned with writing for children, as a school librarian, teacher (secondary & tertiary level), literary critic & reviewer, editior and from 1985 publisher. He lecturered in Children's Literature at Melbourne Teachers College for 15 years before moving to Sydney & switching careers. In 1985 with his wife Lois, also a teacher librarian, he set up his own small publishing company, Walter McVitty Books. He is well known through his numerous reviews and articles, and biographical and critical studies of Australian children's authors & illustrators.
