Notes

Double hemisphere map of the world showing the anticipated areas from which the transit of Venus in 1761 could be wholly or partially visible. Nouvelle Hollande and Terre de Diemen are shown. In the South Atlantic Terre de Vue marks land discovered in 1739 by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier. Bouvet de Lozier was convinced it was part of a great southern continent and and named it "Cap de la Circoncision " (Bouvet Island).

"Presentee au Roi le 27 avril 1760 par Mr De L’Isle de l'Academie Royale des sciences."

Over-printed with a second copperplate in red, the colouring of the map reflects those areas where the transit could be observed.
