Gus Haddon was born in Echuca, Vic. and reared in an orphanage. He went on the track at an early age and was unemployed for many years. He finally settled in Brisbane, where he got a job in the dry cleaning industry which comes under the clothing trades. He later became an official of the Clothing Trades Union in Victoria and later still the organiser of the Watchmakers, Jewellers and Dental Mechanics Association of Victoria. At the time of his death he held leading positions in the Combined Pensioners' Association and in the Council for Social Service Justice. He discusses his experiences on the track and talks about the race horse, Phar Lap.
