The title Dreaming the Past, refers to thinking and visualising the late 19th century in the Clarence Valley through the photographs of John William Lindt. In 2004 Sam and Janet Cullen and family gifted a collection of thirty-seven albumen paper photographs by John William Lindt (1845 - 1926). This gift changed the direction of the Grafton Regional Gallery and all who were associated with the gift. As predicted at the time the change has been significant and very positive and this is the Lindt story, the story that this book aims to tell. The Aboriginal community of the Clarence Valley and the North Coast, the people of the Bundjalung, Gumbayngirr and Yaegl nations, embraced the gift and have been very supportive and involved throughout the story. This, along with their guidance, has ensured the success of the gifting and subsequent series of events and projects, including the Lindt Research Project and the publication of this book.--P. 7.
