"Frederick Marryat was a naval hero of the Napoleonic era who later won widespread acclaim as a popular novelist. Among his many achievements was the successful adaption of Sir Home Popham’s system of flag signaling for use of the merchant navy. Marryat’s system soon became the standard. … His book was mandatory reference for merchant navy officers, accordingly it was published in numerous editions, the 11th issued after Marryat’s decease in 1848" -- Horden House catalogue, The collection of Robert Edwards AO (2012)
