Summary

Peter Hughes discusses his early life in Perth as the youngest of 8 siblings; his working life after leaving school; his son Leigh, born when Peter was 21; the development of his successful roofing business; sport activities including AFL; his first visit to Bali in 1991 and returning annually with Leigh; Paddy’s Bar on the night of the bombing, who he was with and what he was doing when the bomb exploded; the chaotic aftermath and his journey to hospital and evacuation to Darwin; his medical treatment in Darwin and Adelaide and eventual return to Perth; returning to Bali 4 months after the attack for a television program and a subsequent visit to deliver a victim impact statement; thoughts on what makes him resilient and how his upbringing helped him; the help his son Leigh provided; how victims of terrorism should receive compensation as travel and health insurance are not recognised; the development and activities of the Peter Hughes Burn Foundation; the 10th anniversary of the bombing; how the bombing has changed his life and how he intends moving on from Bali.
