MS Acc12.065 comprises correspondence of Xavier Herbert and Arthur Dibley, with references to Poor fellow my country and the manuscript of Capricornia, which was retained by Dibley until 1961. The collection contains 19 letters from Herbert to Dibley (some including notes and greetings from Sadie Norden), one receipt for remittance from Dibley in Sydney to Herbert in Darwin and one file copy of letter from Dibley to Herbert (1 packet).

Writer. Xavier Albert Francis Herbert was born in Geraldton, Western Australia in 1901. Herbert was Superintendent of Aborigines in Darwin in 1935-1936. His first published novel, Capricornia, won the Commonwealth 150th Anniversary Prize in 1938. Further biographical information at: http://trove.nla.gov.au/people/1467317
Arthur Dibley, only son of a prominent Sydney businessman (managing director of Palings Music Store), was educated at the University of Sydney, worked initially for P.R. Stephensen & Co., taking Xavier Herbert’s part in 1934 in the secretive plan to publish Capricornia with a London publisher. Thereafter, he became confidant and friend of Xavier and Sadie Herbert.
