Missionary. John Gibson Paton was born in Scotland in 1824, the eldest of 11 children of James and Janet Paton. He grew up in Dumfriesshire in Scotland and later studied theology and medicine in Glasgow. In 1858 he was ordained in the Reformed Presbyterian Church as a minister and missionary to the southern New Hebrides. In 1862 he travelled to Australia and Scotland to address meetings and raise funds in aid of the mission. Whilst in Scotland, he married his second wife Margaret (Maggie) Whitecross in 1864, and was subsequently appointed to establish a new mission station on Aniwa Island, near to Tanna. Maggie Paton bore ten children, four of whom died.
Two of their sons, Frank Hume Lyall Paton and Frederick James Paton, later followed as missionaries in the New Hebrides. Reverend Paton learned the local language and in 1899 his Aniwan translation of the New Testament was printed. Together with Maggie Paton he taught the Scriptures, ministered to the sick and dying, taught the practical use of tools, held worship services and trained native teachers who were sent to villages to preach the gospel. Reverend Paton continued to tour Australia, New Zealand, Britain and the United States in mission interests, and later in life he became involved in the debate on the future of the New Hebrides. Maggie Paton died at Kew, Victoria in 1905 and Reverend Paton died at Canterbury, Victoria in 1907 at the age of 82.
