MS Acc12.088 comprises research notes, correspondence, clippings, articles, interviews, chapter outlines and drafts, source material and royalty statements relating to: Knightley's publications on Kim Philby; The second oldest profession, and later talks and articles on spies and espionage; The first casualty; The secret lives of Lawrence of Arabia; An affair of state; The pearl of days; Suffer the children; A hack's progress; proposed projects; lectures, addresses and speeches; conferences and symposia; legal actions by and against Knightley. The collection also contains personal and biographical papers including curricula vitae, school reports, correspondence, press cards, notebooks and scrapbooks of early articles (31 boxes).

Journalist. Phillip George Knightley was a special correspondent for The Sunday times for 20 years from 1965 until 1985 and one of the leaders of its Insight investigative team. He was twice named Journalist of the Year (1980 and 1988) in the British Press Awards. He has lectured on journalism, law, and war at the National Press Club, Canberra and the Australian Senate. His two main professional interests have been war reporting and propaganda and espionage. Knightley was born in Australia but has worked most of his life in Britain. He now divides his time between Britain, Australia and India. Knightley was created a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2005 for service to journalism.
