MS Acc13.022 comprises ten letters written in French by Atkinson between 28 July 1890-1 October 1895 from England, to his Flemish friend and art colleague, Josué Dupon. Atkinson comments on art subjects as well as social and personal matters. The letters have been translated into English by the donor and are accompanied by research notes on Atkinson, particularly in relation to his time and activities in Australia and New Zealand (1 folder).
- Biography/History:

Painter and illustrator. Robert Atkinson was born at Leeds, England in 1863 and lived in England until 1885. He studied art in Antwerp, where he met Josué Dupon at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts, and worked in Australia and New Zealand as a colonial artist. In Sydney he exhibited with the Art Society of New South Wales. He moved back to England but returned to New Zealand in 1895 where he died the following year at Dunedin.
