Summary

Kathryn Lowe-Henricks, a dancer and arts administrator, speaks about her family background, her early artistic experiences, her initial ballet training; her early academic background; the Little Miss Margaret O'Brian Contest, performing in the film The Unfinished Dance, and performing as a stand-in for Margaret O'Brian. She discusses her early dance training with Bronislava Nijinska, Mia Slavenska, Tatiana Riabouchinska and David Lichine; performing with the San Francisco Opera Ballet, Southern Californian Youth Ballet and the Chicago Ballet; early choreographic influences; and dancing with the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet. She talks about Alvin Ailey; Lester Horton; Agnes de Mille; the New York City Ballet; taking class with Martha Graham; attending the University of California; Ann Roberts; establishing the Kathryn Lowe School of Dance and the Kathryn Lowe Dance Ensemble in California.

Lowe-Henricks recalls moving to Australia, working with Shirley McKechnie at Rusden State College, her work as dance officer on the Theatre Board of the Australia Council; the demise of Ballet Victoria; a review into the West Australian Ballet; the North Western Ballet Guild and their funding from the Australia Council; her role in the establishment of a dance in education company model which became TasDance; the establishment of Don Asker's Human Veins Dance Theatre; the Rotherwood project to establish a long-term plan for dance development; the Australia Council convened 1991 Dance Summit; and her perceptions of the future development of the professional dance industry in Australia.
