Biography/History

"A disquieting account of injustice and condition on Norfolk Island written by a solicitor falsely convicted for altering the contents of a will. William Henry Barber was sentenced to transportation in 1844 and served two years and four months of his sentence on Norfolk Island. He was singled out for special treatment by the guards and overseers, and his sad experience is here recorded in some detail. In due course Barber was removed to Van Diemen's Land, and he ultimately secured a free pardon in November 1848. By focussing attention on the systematic mistreatment of prisoners this book accelerated growing public concern about condition on Norfolk Island and played a part in the demise of transportation to the eastern colonies of Australia"--Hordern House Catalogue, July 2013.
