Asche was born in Geelong, January 24, 1871. His career began in London, 1893 and by 1904 he and his actress wife Lily Brayton formed a company. In 1907 they leased His Majesty's Theatre and produced, directed and acted in many innovative interpretations of Shakespeare. He toured Australia successfully three times in 1909-1910, 1911-1912 and 1922-1924. He is best remembered as the author of the musical Chu Chin Chow which ran for five years between 1916 and 1921 modelled on Kismet where he played Hajj. He directed another successful musical the Maid of the Mountains. Brayton was born in Lancashire, 23 June 1876. Her career began with the Benson company in 1896 however her London stage debut was in 1900. She married the Australian actor Asche either in 1897 or 1899. In 1904 toured as Yo-San in the Darling of the Gods. Her career followed that of her husband with whom she toured Australia in 1909 and 1912-13. Together they produced the successful Chu-Chin-Chow which ran uninterrupted from 1916-1921 in which she played Zahrat al-Kulub nearly 2,000 times. Her last stage appearance was as Portia in Julius Caesar in 1932. A versatile actress who roles included Shakespeare. A beautiful woman who was a popular actress in England. After Asche's death she married Dr. Douglas Chalmers Watson. She died, age 76 on 30th April 1953. |
