Amos Hee speaks about his early childhood and schooling in Malaysia; his parent’s careers; migrating to Australia at age 13; the impact of the Affirmative Action Policy in Malaysia; his extended family in Sabah; cultural differences between Australia and Malaysia; his first memories of Melbourne; the history of Wantima; adapting to Australian culture; his Australian education; attitudes to homosexuality in Australia; racism; studying engineering and life at Melbourne University; his growing interest in politics during University; changing to studying landscape architecture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; attending the 1990 Mardi Gras in Sydney; volunteering with the Victorian AIDS Council; travelling overseas; the impact of different cultures on gay communities; completing a Masters in Medical Anthropology at Melbourne University; moving from Melbourne to Byron Bay; the effect of technology on the gay community; and the greater social acceptance of homosexuality.
