Sir John Yocklunn, talks about his family background; coming to Australia; schooling at Perth Modern School and Northam High School, Perth and Arts degree at Perth University. He then discusses employment in the Commonwealth Public Service, in particular the National Library, and then joining the Administrative College of Papua New Guinea as librarian in charge in late 1960s. Yocklunn then discusses his involvement with Pangu Pati and becoming principal private secretary to Chief Minister, Michael Somare and his experiences in Papua New Guinea including the establishment of the National Library of Papua New Guinea. He then talks about leaving PNG in 1983 and taking up the position of Chief Librarian at Gippsland College of Advance Education. Yocklunn then discusses his involvement with Commonwealth Library Association, Chinese Museum, CARE Australia and Rotary and his ongoing interest and links with PNG.
He then talks about growing up in Western Australia; acquiring Australian citizenship; development of interest in PNG; Tony Voutas; Yocklunn ideology and Pangu ideology; Chinese in PNG; influence of expatriates on Pangu policies; Michael Somare and his relationship with Chan; Somare's visits to China, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia and his relationship with Japanese. Yocklunn then looks at the situation of women in Pangu and their involvement in politics and public life and the attitude of colonial officers to self-government and independence; organisation of Pangu branches; village-based development policies and traditional practices; adaptation of Western institutions and cultural policies and organisations.
