Professor Ron Penny, Director, Centre for Immunology, St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, NSW, speaks of his background in medical research; setting up immunology laboratory St Vincent's Hospital; medical research funding; construction of Centre for Immunology building; first contact with AIDS as a disease; Sydney AIDS Study Group; epidemiological study of HIV & gay men; his representation on AIDS Taskforce, National Advisory Committee on AIDS & ANCA; lessons learned from AIDS epidemic; success of Australian response to the disease; needle exchange; support given to AIDS research by St Vincent's; Grim Reaper campaign; AIDS education; scientific advances made from AIDS study.

Part of a project undertaken jointly by the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations and the National Library of Australia focussing on the social and political response in Australia to AIDS.
