Ian O'Donnell headed up the National Mapping & Information Group within Geoscience Australia until his retirement from the Australia Public Service in 2008. During his 40 years with the organisation he was directly involved with mapping and geospatial geosciences. He was largely responsible for shaping the strategic direction in which various elements of geoscientific and topographic information were acquired, manipulated and managed in the organisation. O'Donnell was Chair of the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping, a working group of the former Australian New Zealand Land Information Council (ANZLIC), between 2004-2006. During this period he introduced a range of initiatives that facilitated data sharing across the jurisdictions and private sector agencies.
