- An artist's book with handwritten text in pencil, and woodcut illustrations, based on a four day train trip from Vancouver to Toronto, during which the artist hoped to see a moose. Des Cowley writes, "On the surface, the text is whimsical: 'I have never seen a moose. Not even in a zoo. I have seen the head of a stuffed one on a barber's wall.' Spurred on by memories of childhood book Life Before Man, filled with exotic images of prehistoric animals and dinosaurs, Day writes of his mounting excitement at the prospect of seeing a moose. A series of woodcuts depicts scenes that Day sees from his window, or within the train - a bear walking in the woods; a still from Hitchcock's Rear Window that he watches on his computer; his own hand as it draws on a wood block, presumably preparing one of the woodcuts used in book. By journey's end, a sense of boredom and disappointment has set in: '7th May, 2010. It's dark outside. Tomorrow morning I'll be in Toronto. I will have crossed the width of Canada, and haven't seen a moose. I can see my reflection on the surface of the window.'" ("Mountains Brown Press, the recent artist's books of Phil Day," Imprint, volume 48, number 1 (Autumn 2013), page 19).
