- Summary:
-
"The origins of Building Bathurst can be traced to 1969 when Graham Lupp completed an ungraduated architectural honours thesis on Edward Gell, the dominant architect in Bathurst between 1858 and 1880. From this came the idea for a book that would pay homage to Gell and other architects and builders of nineteenth century Bathurst, and their buildings. Initial research in 2011, however, indicated a book of far greater scope was required to properly acknowledge their lives and contribution. The work is set out as a series of biographies, which include all the known buildings these pioneers created, not only in Bathurst, but in a region that covers much of Central NSW. In 2012 Building Bathurst was adopted by Bathurst Regional Council as a project to help celebrate the city's Bicentenary in 2015. However, once research and writing started in January 2013, the vast amount of material uncovered meant the task took until October 2017. Now at around 850 pages in two volumes, with 1,000 illustrations, and in a way not previously attempted, Building Bathurst documents a period in our colonial history centred on Australia's oldest European inland settlement. In the process it also documents the concurrent evolution and development of the profession of architect in New South Wales."--Dust jacket gate fold.
