Summary

MS 6663 comprises a typescript copy made in 1956 (11 leaves) of a letter written in 1822 by Elizabeth Hawkins addressed to "Ann", in England. The letter describes the family's journey over the Blue Mountains to Bathurst where they settled (1 folder).

Biography/History

Elizabeth Hawkins was the wife of Thomas Fitzherbert Hawkins (1781-1837), former naval officer who arrived in the colony of New South Wales with his family in January 1822. He was appointed to the position of commissariat store-keeper at Bathurst and took up government land in the nearby district.

Leaf 11 states the document was "Copied by C.L. Bowling 1884, recopied Oct. 1924, recopied 1956".

An undated transcription of the letter is held in the National Library of Australia Manuscript collection at MS 535.
