- Summary:
-
A single (out-of-series) example of one of the folios from the artist's multi-part work Theatre of the Instant. The Cage is a vertical concertina folded sequence of 19 black and white photographs (taken on Ilford FP4 35mm film and processed in Kodak D-76 film developer). It is a surrealistic photo roman visual narrative that depicts a dreaming man (the actor is George Huxley), dressed in his pyjamas and holding an empty bird cage in front of a number of recognisable Melbourne settings (including the State Library and Museum in Swanston Street). "Our ideas and their ideologies, our politics and their discords, our cultures and their demoted societies have become categorised, classified, hung, paraded, flaunted, curated ... essentially pigeon-holed for a governance and control purposes. Our world has become an 'imaginary museum' without original thoughts, only counterfeited ideas and a labyrinth of filed clichés. The cage has closed on us, leaving the emergency exit as the only escape route to both our lives and our meanings."--Jean-Marc Dupré.
