"This painting depicts a hill with the moon, sitting in the east and lightly resting on top, in Mabel Juli’s country. It is dramatically set against a deep charcoal black sky. It also tells the Dreamtime Garnkiny ngelmang rurt ngarri nginji – a story about the moon and star and forbidden love. A young man loved his mother-in-law which was forbidden, so he was sent away and banished to the night sky where he became the moon. He now appears in the night sky every three days where he is reunited with his love, the young woman with long black hair who appears as the star."--Information from acquisitions documentation.
