Summary

MS 5744 comprises a manuscript essay by Walter Murdoch, ca. 1930s; a letter from Murdoch to Allan Aldous dated 24 January 1963 at South Perth, Western Australia; and, a press cutting of James Agate's column in The Sunday times (London), ca. 1939, in which Murdoch's book of essays titled Saturday mornings is discussed. Also included are photocopies of correspondence relating to Aldous' donation of the "Murdiana" to the National Library of Australia in 1978 (1 folder).

Biography/History

Educationalist, lecturer and writer. Allan Charles Aldous was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1911 and went to England in 1935. As an author, he wrote radio plays, children's fiction, mysteries, short stories and literary criticism. His books include Theatre in Australia (1947), The new Australians (1956), Doctor with wings (1960), and Bushfire (1967). He also created the McGowan series of adventure stories for boys. During the Second World War he served in the 2nd AIF in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Aldous died in Melbourne in 2000.
