Folkloric recording. O'Shannessy was born 1919 at Gilgandra, N. S.W. Jack O'Shannessy a retired butcher discusses his life and sings folk songs. He recalls his parents background, father's trade being a carrier in the time of horse teams; the family property at Gilgandra; going to Mass in a sulky; leaving school early; animosity between the Public and Catholic schools; hymns at school; games at home; dances learnt; the orchestras that played in the Gilgandra area; his father's songs and humorous stories; starting work at the Gilgandra pub; his job as a butcher; building a slaughter yard; leaving the butchery trade; working at the Dubbo slaughter yards; slaughterhouses in the 1960's; later years, abattoirs at Dubbo; meat inspectors; unions at the meat works.
O'Shannessy speaks about his war years, joining the Light Horse at 18 years in 1938; having joined the Army in 1941. He recalls the Cowra camp; becoming a despatch rider; joining the Engineers and being sent to Queensland; army stories in Queensland; being sent to New Guinea on the troopship; the Battle at Tarakan; his job in the Army detecting mines; more on the battle in New Guinea.
