In mid-1974 the Australian Government bought a large part of Glebe, comprising 700 houses and a few commercial buildings on 19 hectares, with a view to restoring existing houses, building new units and thereby rehabilitating this inner-city residential area. Some buildings undergoing restoration yielded many historic documents and papers of deceased residents and businesses
