- Summary:
-
This artist's book poses a total of 130 questions (collected from ephemeral printed matter over a period of six months) in an attempt to work out what these regularly asked questions tell us about the world we inhabit, and to create a (satirical) manifesto for the life we may then want to lead. The artist cut out the questions (which are both serious and silly), edited and assembled them, using colour and typography he would normally avoid, and playing homage to artists like Malevich, Mondrian, Newman, Rodchenko, El Lissitski and Albers (who knew something about squares, rectangles, and colour) and movements like the Constructivists, Futurists, de Stijl and the Abstract Expressionists (who also wrote manifestos). Foremost in the design of the book was the notion of how to make all these unfamiliar elements sing on a white page/background, while creating a codex, which after 2,500 years of history, offers no answers, only questions.-Adapted from artist's statement, October 2015.
