No.1 Neighbour: Art in Papua New Guinea 1966-2016 celebrates the strength and diversity of contemporary art from Papua New Guinea, exploring works created from the mid 1960s, through Independence in 1975, to the present day. Accompanying the exhibition of the same name, which draws on the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art's Collection and builds on the major presentation of work from the country in 'The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' (2012), No.1 Neighbour highlights the Gallery's strong focus on the contemporary art and culture of the Pacific and its unique manifestations in Papua New Guinea, including carvings, masks, shields, bilum (string bags), nioge (barkcloth), koromb (spirit houses), sculpture, photography, printmaking and painting, as well as the importance of performance and festivals.
