The earliest material dates from 1853 and consists of family letters and papers relating to residences. The bulk of the copying covers financial records, including cash books, accounts, cheque book stubs, vouchers and correspondence, for the period 1889-1902 when the Hopetouns resided in Australia, dividing their between the Government Houses in Sydney and Melbourne. In aaddition, there are scrapbooks and sketches of Australian tours 1887-91 and 1900-02, family letters and papers including some from the Royal Family, and one from Lord Knutsford 1900, and newspaper cuttings 1901-02.

- 1) Correspondence 1853-1901 including letters of congratulation on appointment as Governor of Victoria and letters concerning Capt. Herbert Waterlow. Correspondents include J.F. McCarron, Lord Kintore, Lord Knutsford and the Prince of Wales.

- 3) Accounts, cheque book stubs and other financial papers 1901-02.
