Summary

Dixon, former waterside worker, talks about his childhood on an Aboriginal mission station on South Coast of N.S.W. ; fringe dwelling camp at Bomaderry; family background, in particular, father's life; sporadic education and first job at 14 at Port Kembla on waterfront. He then describes life on the wharves and the political activity at the time. Dixon then talks about his decision in 1959 to give up drinking and his resolve to fight for Aboriginal justice. In 1963 he joined Waterside Workers Union in Sydney. Dixon describes life in Redfern in 1946 and the situation with the police. He talks in some detail about his friendship with Charles Perkins; involvement with the Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs; referendum campaign from 1960-67 and being awarded Aboriginal of the Year in 1985.
