A manual containing rules for the management of the floating prison hulks used in Britain for housing convicts as printed in 1840 during the tenure of John Henry Capper as superintendent. Situated at ports including Portsmouth, Chatham and Woolwich, the prison hulks were used between 1776 and 1857 primarily for the housing of convicts before their transportation by sea to Australia or other penal colonies. The rules and regulations here govern all aspects of prison life on the hulks, including the duties of the different members of staff including overseer, chief mate, second mate, steward and surgeon. Information on the daily routine contains details of times for prayer, chapel, examination of bedding, registration of prisoners, embarkation, supply of clothing, fitting of irons, transfers between hulks, rules for visitors and the timings of watches for staff, the calculation of which is assisted by a printed volvelle attached as a frontispiece. —Catalogue from Samuel Gedge, May 2017.
