- National Library of Australia's FRM F1157 (Petherick) copy quarter bound in brown leather with marbled boards and has typed note loosely inserted: "Banned Books: Rare Australian Works". by "Anobium". "The Argus" 18th Feb. 1911. "Without doubt the most interesting of supressed Australian books is a work called "Van Diemen's Land Warriors". Besides having been suppressed it has the merit of having been, pehaps the first verses published in Van Diemen's Land. It bears the date 1827, and is a satire on the military forces for their repeated failures to put an end to the bush-ranging of those evil days. This book was submited to a man named James Thomson, a schoolmaster. He does not seem to have been even a J.P., or to have had any authority at all. But, perhaps to curry favour with the officials, he declared the book to be libellous, and advised that every obtainable copy should be burned. This was done, but Thomson kept his own copy which after years of adventure, finally fell into the hands of Mr E.A. Petherick, now the Commonwealth Archivist, who has it among the many wonderful treasures in his custody at Federal Parliament House. The value of the book is not known, as this copy is probably unique".
