(Those two words were my first suggestion for a title, but it was thought they were not explanatory enough - they were, however, the clue to my motive in writing.) C.E.W. Bean"; 2nd copy is inscribed (in a different hand), "To Her Excellency The Lady Gowrie 13.3.44. The smallest acknowledgement of his indefaticable interest in the "plain Australian" - from one of them. ?.B."
