| Biography/History |
Edouard Borovansky, Czech born, arrived in Australia in 1929 as a dancer with the Anna Pavlova company; he returned in 1938 with the Covent Gardens Russian Ballet but elected to remain in Australia at the conclusion of the tour in 1939; he established a Ballet school in Melbourne & eventually a Ballet Company, paving the way for the development of a national company; he choreographed a number of works for his Company and was naturalised in 1946. Robert Helpmann, born Mt. Gambia (S. Aust.), pursued a career as an actor, choreographer, dancer & director; he left for London in 1932 where he established a world reknowned career in dance, theatre & film; from 1955 he returned to Australia to perform on various occasions, held the position of joint Artistic Director of Australian Ballet in 1965 which he shared with Peggy van Praagh until 1974; in 1976 he became sole Artistic Director of the Australian Ballet; he choreographed numerous works for the Australian Ballet. |
