Biography/History

Writer and academic. Cassandra Jane Pybus was born in 1947 and graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in 1971 and a Ph.D. in history in 1979. Pybus has been a regular commentator for national newspapers and has contributed to Meanijn, Island magazine and Overland, among other publications. She was editor of Island magazine from 1989 to 1994 and was founding editor in 1996 of the electronic forum, Australian humanities review. She is the author of Community of thieves (1991), Gross moral turpitude: the Orr case reconsidered (1993 and 1994), which won the Colin Roderick Award for the Best Australian Book in 1993, Columbus' blindness, and other essays (ed., 1994), The devil and James McAuley (1999), and, Black founders: the unknown story of Australia's first black settlers (2006). Pybus is the Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow, 2007-2011 at the University of Sydney.
