TAPE 1: Professor Alan Trounson recalls his family background; schooling and early aspirations to be a farmer; influence of teachers in science; realisation that he would not become a farmer; studying Wool Technology at UNSW; good basis in scientific analysis, biology and genetics; also practical experience on farms; Masters degree, multiple births in sheep; PhD, sheep embryology; research job at Cambridge University for three years; description of Cambridge and his research activities; frozen embryos (sheep), IVF and egg maturity; returning to Australia to work with Carl Wood in IVF in Melbourne (assisted by a grant from the Ford Foundation); development of fertility drugs; heavy involvement with human IVF; Trounsen's background in animal research helped; in late 1970s, early 1980s, Australia leading the world in IVF research; opponents to IVF; effect of public opposition on Trounson's family.
