King speaks about her father who was a white deep-sea fisherman from Tweed Heads, and about her mother who was from the Mitchell area. King was the second eldest of 10 children, with eight of her siblings having an Aboriginal father. She was removed from Caloundra to Purga Aboriginal Mission near Ipswich, Qld. along with two siblings at the age of 8. She describes conditions on the Mission. From age 14, she worked as a housemaid on a property near Dalby, Qld., before marrying in 1940 and raising 14 children.
