Summary

Leunig speaks of his working class family background and growing up in Footscray, his exposure to political and cultural influences, his education including attending Anglican Sunday school though his family was not religious, his parents' socialist leanings, his lack of interest in scholarship with little interest in school except English and his involvement in filmmaking in his final year, his ambition to become a filmmaker, how he was influenced by migrant friends including Russians, Poles, Germans, Italians, Baltics, drew for the student newspaper while attending Monash University before dropping out, enrolled in a film course at Swinburne Institute but dropped out, how he later drew for Broadside and later was appointed in 1969 as the political cartoonist for the publication Newsday, his style moving from political to personal cartoons, how he became cartoonist for the Sunday Observer and the Nation Review and his later move to the Age, his travelling experiences, influences on his cartooning and illustrating style included Tanner and Petty even Aboriginal cave paintings, until he developed a distinctive style, his motivation for drawing, his social outlook.
