Donald Stuart Leslie Friend was born near Moree, N.S.W. on Feb. 6, 1915. Defying his family's expectations to join the landed gentry, he chose to pursue art instead. He studied at the Royal Art School and under Dattilo Rubbo in Sydney and later at the Westminster School in London, then after several years living in West Africa, he served in World War II as an artillery gunner and an official war artist. A close associate of Russell Drysdale, after the War he painted with the Merioola group which included Loudon Sainthill and Justin O'Brien. Always in pursuit of the exotic and the bohemian, he travelled widely living in Sri Lanka from 1957-62 and Bali from 1967-80. He exhibited art overseas as well as in Australia, and won competitions such as the Blake Prize for religious painting in 1955. Noted for his wit and conviviality, he wrote and illustrated several books including Bumbooziana (1979) and the semi-biographical Save Me From the Shark (1973). He died in Sydney in 1989.
