MS 1914 comprises: 1. Biographical papers, including manuscript biographical notes and newspaper obituaries. 2. Diary, including an account of a voyage from Sydney to England, 1854-1855, notes on Rotorua and the record of a voyage to the Swan River and Mauritius, 3 February-17 May 1863. 3. Commonplace book kept from the 1840s to 1860s, including notes on primitive man and diary of a voyage from Rotorua to Fiji, June-August 1865. 4. Diary and notebook, 1874, concerning the cession of Fiji. 5. Diary, ca. 1894, including notes on law cases (1 box).
The Acc02.157 instalment comprises the correspondence of John Bates Thurston with his sisters, Eliza West Morton and Emily Burrows, and related family papers and photographs, 1843-1937 (2 boxes).
- Biography/History:

John Bates Thurston arrived in Australia in 1855 and farmed in New South Wales until 1860 when he became Collector to the Linnean Society, Sydney. In 1869, he was appointed acting British consul for Fiji and, in 1872, became Chief Secretary and Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Cakobau Government. Thurston was Governor and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific from 1887 until his death in 1897.
