O'Toole, a timber cutter, speaks of his early years as one of 11 children being brought up on a farm in central Victoria, earning pocket money on Sundays hunting for rabbits, etc in the bush; how his father taught him to be an axeman capable of cutting with either hand; how in 1933 at 17 years of age he went "bush" earning a man's wages to help support the family after his father's accidental death at 56 years of age; the dangers faced by timber cutters and the effects of the Depression; how an accident which killed his brother caused him to change his occupation after working for more than 10 years in the bush; how he returned to work on the farm and the saw mill down at Gould (Vic.); how a year later he went to work at Mt. Erica (Vic.) where he cut timber, drove trucks & worked on other more dangerous jobs in the bush & at the mill; winning five of the six wood chopping events at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1938; salvaging operations in the aftermath of the 1939 fires in Victoria & WWII brought boom times for the mills.
