14 letters, 1786-1797 from Lachlan Macquarie to his uncle, Captain Murdoch Maclaine, of Lochbury. The letters are mainly written from India and describe life in India, career prospects and promotions, his marriage in 1793 and the death of his wife in 1796 as well as other family matters. Also includes a letter, 1791 Mar. 31, India, to his cousin, General Allan Maclean describing the progress of the war with Tippoo Sahib and a letter, 1820 June 10, Government House, Sydney to E. S. Hall regarding Hall's request for land "to the south-west of the Cow Pastures" and for appointment to the position of Coroner.

Lachlan Macquarie was made a Lieutenant in the 77th Regiment and in 1788 embarked on the Dublin for Bombay where he saw action in the war with Tippoo Sahib, taking part in the siege of Cochin, (1795), the capture of Colombo and Point de Galle (1796). In 1797 he held the position of deputy paymaster-general of the Kings troops in the Bombay presidency and in 1794 saw action in the expedition against the Pyche Rajah and in 1799 at the battle of Seringapatam. From 1810-1821 he was Governor of N.S.W.
