Throssell talks about his school memories; influence of teachers; atheism; Paul Hasluck; views on British society; memories of Brazil and diplomatic appointments in Rio De Janeiro and Canberra. He then discusses the impact of the Communist Party Dissolution Bill and the question of himself being a security risk. Throssell then gives his views on ASIO; media representation; Petrov Commission and Arthur Tange. He then discusses his involvement with the Colombo Plan scholarship program. Throssell then talks about H. V. Evatt; John Burton; Jiim Hill and other colleagues from the Dept. of Foreign Affairsincluding Alan Renouf. He then talks about the Commonwealth Foundation and its activities; creation of language tests for overseas students; views on Jim Plimsoll and Keith Waller and his views on the necessity for an internal security service.
Throssell then discusses his writing career, in particular, his third novel which is currently under production and considers the differences between biography and autobiography. He then talks about Mick Shann; working with editors; writing about his parents and his work, "A reliable source". Throssell then talks about Manning Clark; changing nature of Australian society; involvement with Writers against Nuclear Arms and the importance of imagination and reflection in his work. He then discusses his father's WWI experiences and being awarded the Victoria Cross; mother's committment to communism and his exposure to it and he gives his views on socialism.
