Manuscript of Burrell's autobiography published in 1986 by Macmillan under the title Mermaids do exist. The published version was heavily edited. The manuscript holds additional information for researchers as the memoirs cover Burrell's career as a naval officer from 1918 to 1962, and record details of the evolution of Australian defence policies during the twentieth century.

Admiral. Burrell was born at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains in 1904. He joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1918 and served till he retired in 1962 as Chief of the General Staff.
