Folkloric recording. 1. Hazel speaks of working in a printing factory when she met Doug, how they honeymooned in Mallacoota and building a home there, her dislike of life at Mallacoota, how she started on the accordion with Joe Bruce, describes the dances she had on her honeymoon and the variations of names, how Doug prefers listening to jazz than dancing, how she came to play for dances and describes some of the bands particularly those in Kiah reported in the Guinness Book of Records as having the most bands for a small town. 2. Music: Varsovianna (humming). 3. Describes dances held at Mallacoota, describes New Vogue dancing. Doug, a retired miner recalls his father's death in a coal mining accident when he was age 2, how his mother had to take in boarders, how he himself was working in the mines at age 15, discusses the types of mines & mining methods & the rate of pay, limited to a quart of water per shift, describes working as a wheeler & caring for the horses, nationalities working in the mines in the late 1930s. 4. Song: Wonthaggi song(repeated).
5. How Doug learnt the song, recalls community singalongs, cinema on the weekend including silent films, listening to radio plays, dog racing and football as recreations, how to break in horses, riding steers at shows, mining unions creating big strikes over the conditions in the mines, how he joined the Air Force in WWII and Japanese bombers, moving to Mallacoota, how they coped without electricity, no services or transport.
