- Summary:
-
Five issues of this literary magazine were printed in Guangzhou (Canton) at the press of the East India Company between May 1831 and the end of the year. Anonymously edited, it was written for a well-educated English elite, and contained a variety of verse and literary articles, but no current affairs. The last two issues contain lengthy articles on the history of Macau, the first to be written in English. These form the basis of much of Anders Ljungstedt, An historical sketch of the Portuguese settlements in China, published in 1834, and reprinted in 1836. As they are unsigned, as are all other contributions, firm attribution to Ljungstedt cannot be made, though it is likely that they were written by him.
