The diaries are primarily concerned with Kelly's career as a musician, while there are also many references to his rowing exploits. He describes the Olympic eights win in 1908 of the English crew of which he was a member. He refers to many eminent musicians as well as to his friendship with Rupert Brooke. His visit to Australia is also recorded, as is his service at Gallipoli.

Kelly was an oarsman and a musician who was born in Sydney and educated at Eton and Balliol. He joined the Royal Navy in 1914, and served throughout the Gallipoli campaign. He visited Australia in 1911. He was killed on 13 November 1916 in France on the Western Front.
