Newspapers and periodicals raise issues of public importance, but rarely provide the opportunity for sustained argument. Books, however, encourage informed debate, especially when they deal with subjects fresh in the public imagination. The shortlists provide many examples of books of this nature, dealing with subjects such as East Timor, Federation, ethnic cleansing, the lost and stolen generations, racism, Australia's treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, and the formation of Australian nationalism.
