Typescript journal written by Jane Caverhill (1841-1894), daughter of Joseph Gardner Mack, entitled "Early life in Australia 1841 to 1889." Gives detailed descriptions of the Mack family and other experiences in the Western Districts and in particular at 'Berrybank'. Also includes two newspaper clippings and two manuscript notes relating to J. G. Mack and his son Joseph Mack, junior (1845-1926).

The Mack family from Berrybank' were an old pastoral family of the Western Districts of Victoria. They were noted as breeders of merino sheep. The father of the family Joseph Gardner Mack settled at Berrybank in 1851.
