While these papers contain some family and personal letters and photographs, the bulk of the collection consists of papers which Dargie's involvement in various government committees related to the arts. These committees include the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board, 1961-73 ; the Australian War Memorial Art Advisory Committee, 1964-75 ; the National Art Gallery Committee of Inquiry, 1965-66 ; the Australian National Gallery Interim Council, 1968-71 ; the Aboriginal Arts Advisory Committee, 1970-72 ; the Board of Trustees of the Territory of Papua New Guinea Art Gallery, 1970-74 ; and the National Capital Planning Advisory Committee, 1970-73. These papers consist chiefly of reports, agendas, minutes, press cuttings, printed material and a small amount of corespondence. The personal correspondence, which dates chiefly from 1960, consists mostly of letters to Dargie from such people as Rudy Komon, Russell Drysdale, Sir Daryl Lindsay, Sir Leon Trout, Robert Haines and Lady Hamilton Fairley. Also included in the collection is a small group of papers documenting the commissioning, painting and exhibition of Dargie's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, 1954-55.
