- Biography/History:
-
The Imperial Federation League was founded in London in 1884 to promote imperial federation by fostering close imperial ties between Britain and self-governing states within the British Empire. Branches of the Imperial Federation League grew up throughout the Empire and in 1885 the Imperial Federation League of Victoria was established as the first branch in Australia. The Victorian branch considered Empire policy issues and such domestic matters as the protection and development of native industries, colonial taxation, defences and the federation of Australia. The Victorian branch declined in about 1909-1910, having outlived the collapse of its parent organisation in 1893 and the failure of all other branches.
